John 17:1-3 states:
17:1 When Jesus had said this, he raised his eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you,
17:2 just as you gave him authority over all people, so that he may give eternal life to all you gave him.
17:3 Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.”  (New American Bible)
Deplorably, the antichrists used John 17:3 to deny the Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ by distorting its true meaning (cf 2PT 3:16).
They said the verse clearly taught that the Father is the only true God, thus, Jesus Christ is not God.
Are the antichrists correct in their conclusion?  No.  The antichrists are never correct, but they are always DEAD WRONG.

Analyzing John 17:3:
JN 17:3 Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.”  (NAB)
• First, what does eternal life means?
Eternal life means, “that they should know you (the Father)” and “and the one whom you sent (the Son).”
To repeat: Eternal life means to know the Father and the Son.  This means, the Father and the Son are inseparable.  Either you believe in one and you believe in the two, or you deny one and you deny the two.  And this conforms to the teachings of the Apostles:
1JN 2:22-23 Who is the liar? Whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ.  Whoever denies the Father and the Son, this is the antichrist.  No one who denies the Son has the Father, but whoever confesses the Son has the Father as well.  (NAB)
1JN 1:3 what we have seen and heard we proclaim now to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; for our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.  (NAB)
2JN 1:9 Anyone who is so “progressive” as not to remain in the teaching of the Christ does not have God; whoever remains in the teaching has the Father and the Son.  (NAB)
• Second, who is the Father and who is the Son?
The Father is the only true God, and the Son is Jesus Christ.
• Third, the Lord Jesus Christ earlier said:
JN 10:30 “The Father and I are one.”  (NAB)
If the Father and the Son are one, and if the Father is the only true God, then the Son, Jesus Christ, is the only true God.  That fact is corroborated by this verse:
1 JN 5:20 And we [have seen and] know [positively] that the Son of God has [actually] come to this world and has given us understanding and insight [progressively] to perceive (recognize) and come to know better and more clearly Him Who is true; and we are in Him Who is true—in His Son Jesus Christ (the Messiah). This [Man] is the true God and Life eternal.  (Amplified Bible)

Expected rebuttals from the antichrists:
The antichrists will surely retort:
If the Father and the Son are one, and if the Son is Jesus Christ, then the Father, the only true God, is Jesus Christ.  Is that it?
To rephrase it, the antichrists would be saying: The Father, the only true God, cannot be Jesus Christ.
For that, let the prophet Isaiah counter-refute them:
ISA 9:6-7 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.  Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.  (King James Version)
• Who is that child born to us who will rule from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity?
The child is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ as reported by St. Luke in this wise:
LK 1:30-33 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.  Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.  He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”  (NAB)
• Was Jesus Christ ever called the Mighty God?
Yes.  After ascending into heaven and took His seat at the right hand of God, the Lord Jesus Christ was called the Lord God Almighty:
RV 1:7-8 Behold, he is coming amid the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him.  All the peoples of the earth will lament him.  Yes. Amen.  “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “the one who is and who was and who is to come, the almighty.”  (NAB)
Indeed, the Alpha and the Omega, the Lord God Almighty, who is coming soon, is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ, according to His own testimonies:
RV 22:12-16 “Behold, I am coming soon. I bring with me the recompense I will give to each according to his deeds.  I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”  Blessed are they who wash their robes so as to have the right to the tree of life and enter the city through its gates.  Outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the unchaste, the murderers, the idol-worshipers, and all who love and practice deceit.  “I, Jesus, sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the root and offspring of David, the bright morning star.”  (NAB)
RV 22:20 The one who gives this testimony says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!  (NAB)
• Was Jesus Christ ever called the everlasting Father?
Yes.  Being the Lord God Almighty, Christ is also called the Father:
2COR 6:15-18 What accord has Christ with Beliar? Or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?  What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said: “I will live with them and move among them, and I will be their God and they shall be my people.  Therefore, come forth from them and be separate,” says the Lord, “and touch nothing unclean; then I will receive you and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.”  (NAB)
Indeed, the living God is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ, according to these testimonies:
RV 1:17-18 When I caught sight of him, I fell down at his feet as though dead.  He touched me with his right hand and said, “Do not be afraid. I am the first and the last, the one who lives.  Once I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever. I hold the keys to death and the netherworld.  (NAB)
1TM 4:10 For this we toil and struggle, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the savior of all, especially of those who believe.  (NAB)
The living God, who is the savior of all is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ, according to these testimonies:
JN 4:42 and they said to the woman, “We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world.”  (NAB)
1JN 4:14 Moreover, we have seen and testify that the Father sent his Son as savior of the world.  (NAB)
• Was Jesus Christ called the Prince of Peace?
Yes.  If the Father is the God of Peace (cf ROM 15:33, 16:20; PHIL 4:9; 1THES 5:23; HEB 13:20), then the Son is the Prince of Peace.
In the virginal conception of the Lord Jesus Christ by the Blessed Virgin Mary as prophesied by Ezekiel, the pristine womb of the Mother was depicted as the closed gate; and the Son sent to the woman was depicted as the Prince, who is the LORD, the God of Israel, in this wise:
GAL 4:4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, (NAB)
EZEK 44:1-3 Then he brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary, facing the east; but it was closed.  He said to me: This gate is to remain closed; it is not to be opened for anyone to enter by it; since the LORD, the God of Israel, has entered by it, it shall remain closed.  Only the prince may sit down in it to eat his meal in the presence of the LORD. He must enter by way of the vestibule of the gate, and leave by the same way.  (NAB)
Indeed, the Prince, the LORD, the God of Israel is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ, according to these testimonies:
JUDE 1:4-5 I say this because some ungodly people have wormed their way into your churches, saying that God’s marvelous grace allows us to live immoral lives. The condemnation of such people was recorded long ago, for they have denied our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.  So I want to remind you, though you already know these things, that Jesus first rescued the nation of Israel from Egypt, but later he destroyed those who did not remain faithful.  (New Living Translation)
1COR 10:1-9 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea, and all of them were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.  All ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was the Christ.  Yet God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the desert.  These things happened as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil things, as they did.  And do not become idolaters, as some of them did, as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to revel.”  Let us not indulge in immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell within a single day.  Let us not test Christ as some of them did, and suffered death by serpents.  (NAB)
EX 3:13-15 But Moses replied, “When I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors sent me to you,’ they will ask me, ‘What is his name?’ So what can I tell them?”  God said, “I am who I am. You must tell them: ‘The one who is called I AM has sent me to you.’  Tell the Israelites that I, the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, have sent you to them. This is my name forever; this is what all future generations are to call me.  (Today’s English Version)
JN 8:23-24 Jesus answered, “You belong to this world here below, but I come from above. You are from this world, but I am not from this world.  That is why I told you that you will die in your sins.  And you will die in your sins if you do not believe that ‘I Am Who I Am’.”  (TEV)
JN 18:36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.  (KJV)

Conclusion:
Therefore, John 17:3 does not negate the Godhood of Jesus Christ, but rather, it bolsters it!
